So, I thought it was a joke at first, but it seems the Jamaican Parliment has recently passed a new law banning any music that depicts sexual acts or glorifies gun violence, murder, rape or arson. For the most part, that’s most of Jamaican Dancehall, which is often times EXTREMELY SEXUAL and or VIOLENT in lyrical content. Even the dances that accompany it seem right out of the Kamasutra. hahaha.
Many young Jamaicans are up in arms over the decision, saying that it violates their freedom to express themselves. But no law in the Jamaican Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, (Glad I’m American!). This video from ChunnelTV interviews several dancehall artists, and I guess I thought it relevant to my readers. What do you think? Should a government be aloud to censor what their citizens hear on public radio? I would agree with it, but once that ball starts rolling, other freedoms go with it, so I have to call them out on it, and say it’s not right, although I would NEVER let my nieces or nephews listen to any of it because its content is mature.
