:: The Time Machine ::

Last fall, I fell in love with a hip-hop band by the name of The Time Machine; a Los Angeles rap trio that specializes in the kind of socially aware, slick rhyme scheme hip-hop that is often associated with the early-RAP legends such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. The Time Machine was founded in late 2003, and have suprisingly been dismissed since by the majority of the American hip-hop circles due to the glorification, in most regards, of gangster rap; being written off as something “old”. Nonetheless, and fortunately for us, the band has continued to grow in popularity in the indie scene.

For the three members of The Time Machine, Jaysone, Comel, and Mekalek, rap has become so unidentifiable and mainstream, that a-lot of positive messages fail to make it to the masses. They differentiate themselves from the plethora of hip-hop hopefuls who consume their music with topics like getting rich, getting laid, and getting richer and this is precisely what makes them unique. Heavily influenced by the retro flagrant sty-lings of the 1980’s, and similar to bands like the widely successful COOL KIDs, The Time Machine brings back something classic, and put a 21st century spin on it.

Their most recent album “Life is Expensive” is in my opinion, one of the best albums of the year. Each song tells a story, reminiscent of the way hip-hop once was. I thoroughly enjoy listening to their music and hope our readers will too. For more information, visit the bands myspace at
